_________________________

This is a multiple-choice adventure based on the first book in the popular "Choose Your Own Adventure" series for kids, written by Edward Packard. The Bantam Books publishing success sold 250 million domestic copies in the U.S. alone between 1978 and 1998, making it one of the most successful children's book series ever.

In the game, you are a kid who enters the Cave of Time to recover four items stolen by the Time Grouches and must return them to their proper places and times. The items are: a golden crown, Abraham Lincoln's hat, the Loch Ness Monster's egg, and a piece of flint.

When entering the cave, you can choose 3 options: up or down which take you to one of the 4 time periods, or go to the Time Grouches' lair where they will attack you two at a time. Using your sword you swing at them until you connect when their guard is down. If you defeat enough of them, you will get one of the required items behind 4 doors.

When you go to each time period, you will have to correctly choose the proper actions in order to solve the required puzzle. You may have to go through each several times until you are able to get everything that is needed.

(Review from lemon64.com) :

Most of you probably remember the old "Choose Your Own Adventure" books. The very first one, "The Cave of Time", was made into a very challenging game for the C64. In this game, you assume the role of the kid who enters into the Cave of Time, with a mission to recover four items stolen by the Time Grouches and return them to their proper places and times. These items are a golden crown, Abraham Lincoln's hat, the Loch Ness Monster's egg, and a piece of flint.

Each time you enter the cave, you are presented with three choices: Go up, go down, or go to the lair of the Time Grouches. The up and down take you to one of the four times that you need to return the objects to, and they are randomly determined each time you enter the cave. To get to the items, you need to enter the lair of the Time Grouches and defeat them.

There are a couple of action scene in this game, and the lair is one of them. The grouches will come at you two at a time, and you only have a sword to hold them off. Push the fire button to swing the sword, which will cause them to step back or lower their guards if you do it enough. Once they lower their shield, you have to stab them to defeat them. If they get to the front of the screen, they stab you. Defeat enough of them, and you get to pick one of four doors which hold the objects. If they stab you enough times, you get booted back to the cave. You can have up to two of the objects at a time, but there are certain combinations you can't carry. For instance, you can't carry both the flint and the egg, or both the crown and the hat.

Each of the four time periods have their own separate set of puzzles you need to solve. Often, they involve going through the time period multiple times, picking the right choices to get certain period-specific items. You won't be able to successfully complete a time period without doing everything necessary beforehand. The order of events in each time period often seem illogical, and several times they are. Sometimes, it all falls to luck as to being able to get one or two certain events to happen. It takes a lot of repetitions and trial-and-error to figure out what you need to do in order to beat a particular level, and a concentrated effort to beat the game. You can lose by getting killed, which can happen in a lot fo places, and it's not very fun if that happens late in the game.

This is not a typical adventure game, and it shouldn't be thought of as one. This is more for people who are looking for a challenge than anything else.
